L-Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that converts to tyrosine. It follows the catecholamine pathway and is a precursor to thyroid hormone. Phenylalanine—>Tyrosine—>Norepinephrine —>Epinephrine . L-Phenylalanine helps support the normal production of mood-elevating chemicals in the brain such as dopamine and norepinephrine. The L form may help support normal mood and attention. It should not be used with MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants, or by patients who have PKU, or hypertension.
